1935 'See India: Lahore Street Scene' Travel Poster
Lahore, the second largest city of Pakistan, the ancient capital of the Punjab, is also the city of poets, the city of love, longing, sin and splendor. This rare travel poster from 1935 places us right in the heart of the hustle and bustle of a market street scene. In the distance Lahore’s ancient gateways can be seen, giving us a peek into this famous city’s history. At the time, a third of the people living in the Lahore district were Sikh and Hindu before India was divided in 1947. Cows and oxes were a common sight in the city streets. Some of the most famous singers have come from Lahore. Allama Iqbal, the most famous poet of the Indian subcontinent, in fact, was inspired to write "shikwa," which is the complaint to God, because of the ambiance of Lahore. The city of Lahore was indeed a different world on its own.
