Kashmir has a long history as a tourist destination. From the 1950s to the 1980s, Kashmir drew people from all around the world. It was once known as an iconic holiday destination celebrated by poets, singers, travel writers, and historians. Kashmir was called "Paradise on Earth," the "Switzerland of Asia," and the "Venice of the East." Dal Lake, with its charming houseboats, narrow canals, serene views of snowcapped mountains, fields of flowering lotus, and floating vegetable gardens, was a favourite destination for many travellers. The tag line at the bottom notes "Amenities for tourists now available" as the country began to promote tourism in the newly post-independence world.
